Fishacello Artificial Wetland

The artificial wetland experiment

This is a guest camp blog from the underwater science team at Mezzacello Urban farm. Theo and Maxwell are the MenTerns in Charge of this experiment.

Today we created a platform for the Fishacello Artificial Wetland. We built this at Mezzacello Urban Farm. We created artificial wetland out of a lot of various materials. In our blog post today, we will be giving you this list of materials and how we created a partial wetland. Enjoy!

First, Neutral Buoyancy

Now, creating an artificial wetland such as Fishacello can normally be very expensive. However, we used the materials at hand to make this cost much lower. The materials we used are things such as hula hoops, pool noodles, and other repurposed thingamajigs. These thingamajigs include netting, a fish feeding ring, and some zip ties.

We started with the netting and zip tied it to a repurposed fish feeding ring. Then Jim, (Also sometimes known by the campers as Crusher of Hopes and Dreams) Told us that we were doing it wrong and that our design wouldn’t work. So, we decided to use the design that Jim gave us, and it DID work. That doesn’t necessarily mean that we were happy about it, but it’s definitely good that it worked.

Designing the Solution

Now, more about the design of Fishacello. “Fishacello has two levels, a top level and a bottom level.”-Maxwell… Tis is the only thing I was allowed to write :(. Technically, There ARE two levels, but only one of them will contain the wetland area. The wetland has many parts, most notably a buttload of sand. We will also incorporate plants and animals such as frogs and will also be making an attempt to get the dragonflies in the area to come to the farm to scare and eat the mosquitoes. This will also elevate the positivity of the Mezzacello Summer Camp experience. This concludes our blog post for today, hope you enjoyed it. Bye-bye!
