This post is a section of the presentation my fantastic intern, Marcus, and I did at Columbus Alternative High School. Marcus and I planned this presentation, and Marcus edited and gave feedback, and we taught the first iteration. We succeeded and failed and now we know more. We will be presenting again next Wednesday.

Proteins, pH, Folding Geometries, Biodomes, and SCIENCE!

Marcus and I spent a few weeks building and scaffolding the content for this STEM Presentation. We decided to tie protein folding to developing compounds for testing pH and exploring biodomes. Marcus is really talented at seeing patterns that will interest kids will find challenging and fun. The photo below is of Marcus being clever and charming teaching CCS students in a presentation at Mid-Ohio Farm how we recycle weeds and food to feed farm animals at Mezzacello Urban Farm.

My intern Marcus

I am not as talented as Marcus because I see facts and data whereas Marcus sees patterns. So we tried to build out and deploy our presentation and it could have gone better. Now we know.

Five Steps Towards Success

Step One: Build Teams Early

  • Step Two: Teach new skills early!

  • Step Three: Build a Protein Folding Map to test for pH

  • Step Four: Create the Anthocyanin compound using the folding protein map

  • Step Five: Learn from following patterns, processes, and structures to build out biodomes

These were the successful parts of our ambitious plans. We know we can teach this in three hours to 20 kids. Now we need to do it again!

A Successful Biodome Construction

Team Hexagon understood the assignment and Alice Cooper is very happy
